edition 01.
happy january!
I can’t believe it’s already 2023. I feel like 2022 went by so quickly and now… I’m thinking about graduation?! I still have a week and a half before my semester starts so I’m trying to savor every bit of downtime I have.
+ I am going to publicly announce that I am starting my podcast so everyone can keep me accountable. see more in the announcements section!
you can expect one email from me every two weeks containing:
one quote that has been inspiring me
one journal prompt
one piece of advice*

announcements
the PODCAST! yes!!!
I’ll be releasing it every other tuesday (just like this newsletter — except it’s the OTHER tuesday if that makes sense). the first episode will be dropping a little earlier, sometime this week because I’m traveling next tuesday. so: first episode is coming sometime this week; second episode is coming january 24th, etc.
you should be able to access it on both apple music and spotify. check my instagram stories in the next few days for links and updates.
I’m super excited to share my pod, solidarity on the bench, with you all <3

one journal prompt
what is one hobby/skill I’ve always wanted to learn but never got around to? why?
one piece of advice
“How do I reduce my screen time? I’ve tried uninstalling apps that distract me but I find myself redownloading them again.”
something I’ve grappled with recently is trying to ‘cold turkey’ (go off something suddenly) a bad habit. the cycle usually goes like this:
I decide I want to stop a habit
I quit it cold turkey
I end up re-engaging in said habit
I get frustrated with myself for not being better/having more willpower/etc
it’s hard to suddenly quit something — especially something as addictive and dopamine-inducing as our phones. rather, I’ve tried to replace my habits with something else in the same category. for example:
I want to reduce my screen time —> I replace it with an off-screen activity like reading or journaling
I want to stop craving academic validation —> I diversify my life so that being a student isn’t my entire identity
basically I’ve learned to replace whatever I would be doing with something else. it’s too hard to delete the apps or put down your phone… then you’re twiddling your thumbs with no purpose. what has really helped me is trying (to the best of my ability) to change what I do with my time!
until we meet again,
katie
