1-1-1: on growing up and figuring "it" out (kind of)
read about my advice for my younger self, some changes to the structure of the newsletter, and more updates from me!
december, 2024
edition 58.
ahhh, I am happy to report that I am sizzling in the california sun. okay, okay, the UV index is a maximum of 3 every day, but the sunshine and the blue skies (despite the strong wind) is such a welcome change when compared to storm darragh in the UK that was whipping when I left. for me, it doesn’t feel like christmas until I’m in california! a warm christmas indeed!
I just checked the calendar and unfortunately this is the second last edition of the 1-1-1 newsletter in 2024. the tuesday after next is xmas eve and the tuesday after that is nye. as a girly who now has a job and recognizes the importance of actually taking PTO and holidays because there is no award for being the most overworked, I am giving myself TO (time off, because my time is not paid right now) from the newsletter. I’m going to enjoy it !!!
starting in the new year, 50% (2 editions per month) of the newsletter will be for paid subscribers only. your subscription (around the price of a coffee in LA) will help me keep this newsletter going into the new year alongside my other projects. if any previous editions have touched you or you find the newsletter valuable in any way, please consider supporting me monetarily <3
you can expect one email from me every week containing:

there are tons of guest episodes on the podcast from 2024 that are worth checking out — listen to them here <3
one quote
“you’re not behind.
you’re not off track. there is no way to be. your life is a continuous unfolding of yourself.
it is shaped and guided by the world outside of you, and how you interpret and respond to that world. it is an ongoing exploration of who you are and how you might be.
life does not begin when everything is perfect. it does not start when you think you’re worthy. it’s happening right now.
you are not anywhere but where you are supposed to be, because there is nowhere else to be. the idea that you might have to earn your way into the life that is already yours is an illusion.”
— brianna wiest, the pivot year
one journal prompt
what three things would you most like others (loved ones, potential friends and partners, professional acquaintances, etc.) to know about you?
one piece of advice
“What would you say to your college senior self if you could go back in time?”
I’m writing this from my bedroom at home (that I would frequent in college because I was a short drive away from campus) so it only seems fitting for me to think about my college senior self. If I could have five minutes to sit down with myself, this is what I would say:
everything works out the way it’s supposed to. right now, you’re in the thick of applying to jobs and trying to sell your soul via resume to companies you’ve never even heard of but are advertising on linkedin. half of your friends have return offers from internships they did during their junior year. don’t worry. things work out the way they should. a door will close because a better one is open for you.
along those lines, you can’t plan your way into success so stop trying. take the next best step available to you.
things will happen (they always do) and your life feels like a rug that was pulled out from under you. go back to your tools, lean on your support system, book those extra therapy sessions, cry as much as you need to, and let it pass with as much grace as you can give at the time. it will be okay.
learning how to enjoy your own company will be the best thing you ever do for yourself.
your life doesn’t end when you leave college. trust me, it’s only just beginning.
looking back on your college experience, it’s okay if it wasn’t “the best four years of your life!” — that just means the best years are coming.
talk to your parents more. time spent with them is never time wasted. also, they’re really funny and really insightful and can make you feel better in a heartbeat. you’re not a moody teenager, let them in again.
a few things feel college specific but most things are applicable for whatever stage of your life you may be in right now. just change the word ‘college.’
sending love and lots of hugs. this period can be confusing (our entire life feels like one confusing period after another if I’m being completely honest) and especially isolating because of all the big changes. but, despite it all, you will be fine.
